FilmRise Buys Bullfighting Documentary Gored

FilmRise has acquired exclusive rights in all media to the bullfighting documentary “Gored,” which premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival, Variety has learned exclusively.

The Spanish-language film will be available on digital platforms, including iTunes, Amazon and Netflix, throughout North America, Latin America, Spain and the United Kingdom. FilmRise will also release the movie on DVD and Blu-ray.

The doc centers on Spanish bullfighter Antonio Barrera, who decides to face the bulls one last time after been gored 23 times in the bullring. Ido Mizrahy directed from a script he co-wrote with Geoffrey Gray (“Patrolman P”).

Gray wrote about Barrera’s reputation for being frequently injured in the ring in a 2011 article for Sports Illustrated called “The Dangerous Obsession of Antonio Barrera,” describing Barrera as “the Rocky Balboa” of bullfighting with grit, heart and spirit.

When Barerra announced he would retire, the athlete agreed to allow filmmakers to shoot his preparation for his final confrontation with a bull and the aftermath of his life after bullfighting.

“Gored” also documents an ancient cultural spectacle challenged by modern times.

“Bullfighting is an incredible brutal spectacle, and part of me is happy to see it go away,” Mizrahy said in an interview earlier this year at Tribeca. “In the same way Antonio is being phased out of the world of bullfighting, bullfighting is being phased out of the world.”

“Gored” won the best documentary feature award at Raindance in the U.K. and the best sports documentary prize at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.

“Gored” was executive produced by Selena Roberts and Valda Witt, and co-produced by Meghan Wurtz and Andrew Mer.

The deal was negotiated between FilmRise’s Fisher and Max Einhorn with Steven Beer of FWRV.
